When commuters cross the Chester Bridge into Missouri from Illinois, they cannot miss the five fireworks stands located along the first mile. Many southern Illinois residents are making the annual trip over the border to Missouri, Kentucky or Indiana to purchase fireworks that are illegal in Illinois.

UI officials now hope Mayflower will open for fall semester despite Dubuque Street still being closed near the residence halls and damage making first-floor dorm rooms uninhabitable.



"Pending reports from engineering, it is our intent to have full [student] occupancy for fall," said Von Stange, the director of University Housing.

Kalyn Johnson called her apartment a war zone.



With mud coating the formerly white kitchen tile, furniture tipped over, and ruined clothes lying in piles, it certainly looked like one.



Two weeks after Johnson and her husband moved all of their belongings into their new home, they were suddenly evacuated, having just enough time to pack the essentials of clothes and overnight necessities.
